Living dignity, connection, and shared responsibility
Table of Contents
Belonging at Cathedral is built through intentional relationships, inclusive practices, and a commitment to dignity, empathy, and shared responsibility across the school community.
What Belonging Means at Cathedral
Belonging at Cathedral School for Boys means that every student, family, and adult is known, valued, and respected. It reflects the school’s belief that boys learn and grow best in a community where they feel safe to be themselves, ask questions, and build meaningful relationships.
Belonging is not a program or a moment. It is a daily practice shaped by how the community listens, responds, and cares for one another across differences of background, identity, belief, and experience.
A Commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice & Belonging
Cathedral’s commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice & Belonging (DEIJB) is essential to its mission and to educating boys who lead with empathy, courage, and awareness.
Grounded in Episcopal values and the promise to respect the dignity of every human being, Cathedral’s DEIJB work is guided by three core commitments:
- Empathy and curiosity in conversation, listening to understand lived experience
- Respect and courage in action, speaking up and standing up for what is right
- Reflection, accountability, and repair, learning from mistakes and growing together
These commitments shape curriculum, policies, relationships, and community expectations across all areas of school life.
Belonging in Practice
Belonging is cultivated through intentional structures and everyday interactions, including:
- Advisory and classroom communities where students are known well
- Student affinity and alliance groups that support identity exploration and voice
- Chapel and shared rituals that emphasize dignity, reflection, and connection
- Family and community gatherings that celebrate culture, heritage, and shared values
Through these experiences, boys learn that belonging grows through listening, respect, and responsibility to others.
Educating Boys for a Diverse World
Cathedral prepares boys to live and lead in a diverse and complex world. Students are encouraged to explore multiple perspectives, reflect on their own identities, and understand how systems and choices affect others.
Through age-appropriate dialogue, service learning, and community engagement, boys develop cultural humility, ethical awareness, and the ability to engage difference with curiosity rather than fear.
Belonging at Cathedral does not require sameness. It is built through mutual respect, openness, and shared commitment to care for the community as a whole.
Families as Partners in Belonging
Families are essential partners in cultivating belonging. Cathedral invites families to participate in conversations, events, service opportunities, and reflection throughout the year.
By working together, the school and families model for boys what it means to build inclusive communities rooted in dignity, empathy, and shared responsibility.
A Community Where Boys Are Known
Belonging at Cathedral is ultimately about relationship. It is felt in classrooms, on the playground, in Chapel, and in moments of challenge and celebration alike.
By fostering an intentionally inclusive and caring community, Cathedral helps boys understand that leadership begins with how they treat others and that belonging is something they help create every day.
